Description

State-by-state dataset of US vehicle sales tax rules and DMV fees for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. For each state it records the statewide vehicle sales/use tax rate, how the state taxes vehicles (sales tax, use tax, title ad valorem tax, highway use tax, excise), whether counties or cities add local tax, whether a dealer trade-in reduces the taxable amount, the title fee, and the tax and fees on a reference purchase of a $30,000 new car from a dealer. Every row links to the official state DMV or revenue department page it was checked against, with the date it was checked (data as of). Files: car-sales-tax-by-state.csv (51 rows), car-sales-tax-by-state.json (same data with more detail), README.md (column definitions). Notes: local (county/city) taxes are excluded from the $30,000 figures because they depend on the buyer's address. Fees change; check the official source before relying on a figure. Maintained by US Vehicle Tax Calculator , which provides a free interactive calculator for each state (new or used, dealer or private sale, trade-in, EV fees).
